What Happened

The Institute Colloquium titled Einstein’s Ears: The Astronomy of Gravitational Waves, delivered by Prof. Scott Hughes from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was held on November 12, 2025, was co-hosted in publicity by Singularity: The Astronomy Club of IISER Kolkata.

The session provided an insightful overview of the rapidly evolving field of gravitational wave astronomy. Prof. Hughes introduced the audience to the fundamental concepts of gravitational waves, highlighting their origin from some of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. He discussed in detail various sources of gravitational waves, including compact binary systems such as black holes and neutron stars, along with recent advancements in their detection and analysis.

One of the most fascinating moments during the talk was when he demonstrated the audio of a gravitational waveform generated during the merger of two neutron stars, leaving the audience in awe. The event saw a footfall of about 100 attendees, with the Asima Chatterjee Lecture Hall filled to the brim. The colloquium was followed by an engaging interview session with Prof. Hughes, conducted by members of Singularity. The recorded interview will be released soon on the club’s YouTube platform. Overall, the event was a resounding success, providing attendees with both exposure and inspiration from one of the leading researchers in the field.

Scott Hughes is a Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research focuses upon astrophysical applications of Einstein's general theory of relativity. Much of his work is motivated by new techniques for probing regions of ultrastrong gravity, especially near black holes. A major focus of this work is the science of "gravitational waves". Professor Hughes works on the modeling of gravitational wave sources, and on how one can exploit measured gravitational waves as tools for observational astronomy. Professor Hughes gets great joy from teaching. He has taught undergraduate electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, and relativity, as well as MIT's graduate course in general relativity, and graduate seminars on gravitational-wave physics and computational methods. In 2005, he won the Physics Department's Buechner Teaching Prize for his course on electricity and magnetism, and was honored with MIT's School of Science teaching prize in 2006.
