The Epoch of Reionization

📅March 24, 2024 🕒4:00 PM 📍Google Meet

Details & Abstract

Singularity organized an insightful talk on the Epoch of Reionization, explaining how the first stars and galaxies illuminated the early universe. The session highlighted modern techniques used to study this transformative cosmic era.

What Happened

Anshuman Acharya, from the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, gave our club a fascinating talk about the "Epoch of Reionization." He explained how, after the Big Bang, the universe was dark. Then, the first stars and galaxies lit it up! Anshuman discussed how scientists study this "first light" and what it tells us about how the universe became what it is today. He also talked about how new telescopes are helping us see even further back in time. It was a really interesting look at a very early and important time in the universe's history.

Speaker / Author

Anshuman Acharya, a Postdoctoral Fellow at BCCP (Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics), UC Berkeley. He is working with Dr. Simone Ferraro as part of the "Learning the Universe" collaboration to infer properties of physical models of our Universe from kSZ/tSZ maps and galaxy surveys using the Simulation-Based Inference pipeline LtU-ILI.

Before this, he completed his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany with Dr. Benedetta Ciardi and Prof. Volker Springel, and his integrated BS-MS in Physics at IISER Mohali.
